Men With Small Packages Buy SUVs
Its Official. Men who are afraid they don't live up to size are more likely to buy an SUV. They are also more likely to support the war.
We're against the war and drive a Civic, so that should give you an idea about how we measure up.

That's not exactly what the article said. Huh... interesting conclusion drawn. and I have NO DOUBT that the questions weren't posed in such a way to predetermine such a conclusion. That's erroneos. i seriously doubt there is any correlation there. And just HOW did they "displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq war more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle," how was this demonstrated? ANd what does he consider, "homophobic attitudes?" Hmmm I am guessing the guy who created this, "STUDY" probably is against racial profiling, and other sort of "stereotyping" ... yet ... pot, kettle
What a dumb waste of time and brain cells.
My father drives an SUV, supports the Iraq war, is a republican and believes in God. He also supports gay marriage, uses olive-oil based soap and works as a CEO in the fashion industry.
Yeah, I can see it now ... you're right. He MUST be a closet homo with a small penis. I see the correlation.
(ugh ... liberals)
Go, Sarah!
Sarah, honey, you need to take a step back. First off, the article didn't say that these men had small penises, only that their "masculinity was challenged." Ian drew the line in an attempt to be humerous. Take that for what you will, but don't discredit the study because you didn't bother to learn HOW it was done (a good question which could have been answered, without anger, in about 5 seconds.)
In fact, you can read the entire study online (a PDF). In the paper the author discusses methodology, subjects, results, etc. You can also email the author himself if you were so inclined (rbw23@cornell.edu).
I'll save you the trouble. The methodology is sound. In fact, the author has been invited to the American Sociological Association's 100th annual meeting in Philadelphia to present his paper, which means that it's been peer reviewed and acknowledged as properly conducted (if not accepted.)
Here's what the author had to say about the study:
"The intention of the study was to explore whether masculine overcompensation exists and where. But the point isn't to suggest these are the only factors that can explain these behaviors. Likewise, there may be a wide variety of other behaviors that could increase when men are concerned about their levels of masculinity."
From the Cornell press release:
"In a separate study, Willer verified that support for the Iraq War, homophobia and interest in purchasing an SUV were all considered masculine by study participants."
You could have found this out yourself but, instead, you took things personally, as if Ian would even know your father or would knowingly say something bad about him or about you (if he did, as your boyfriend, I would promise it would be the last thing he would ever do.)
So relax. If the results of this study touches a nerve with you, as it clearly did, perhaps you need to re-evaluate your views on certain issues.
And, besides, I have personally heard you say to me, on numerous occasions, and not while drunk or otherwise impaired, that anyone who owns a Hummer MUST be compensating for something.
Perhaps you were joking. Well, so was Ian. Lighten up.
Shawn -
"Perhaps you were joking. Well, so was Ian. Lighten up."
I'd give you the same advice.
I never said Ian was saying anything about my father in particular. If you reread what I wrote, I was merely trying to point out that such a correlation and judgement makes no sense -- and is a gross generalization that supports unfair stereotypes.
Besides, who really gives a f*** if buying an SUV is masculine or not? What a waste of time and energy for a study that is culturally biased.
Um HELLO! We still havent't cured Cancer or found a solution for World Peace.
