Queens Slated For Annihilation By Giant Concrete Box
Wal*Mart's proposed opening of a Queens store is creating alot of opposition. Two of the biggest opponents are local business leaders and labor unions: when business owners and labor unions can find a common enemey you know they're talking about some serious shit.
Labor unions are arguing against the nation's biggest retailer invading the five boroughs because of the lack of health insurance, low wages, and Wal*Mart's uncanny ability to fire employees who try to unionize.
Noting that Wal-Mart employs 1.2 million Americans, [Wal*Mart Spokesman] said, "People wouldn't stay with a company that wasn't providing opportunities and competitive wages and benefits."
That is of course, unless there are no employers left because Wal*Mart has shutdown all the small businesses.

I feel this is a good time to mention that I read Sam Walton's autobiography many years ago when my older brother bought it for me during middle school. I have nothing but respect for the man, although I can't say the same about his company - some practices of theirs rub me the wrong way.
Interesting Trivia: Did you know that 20 years ago Hillary Clinton was on the Wal-Mart Board of Directors?
I think it was on Thanksgiving, but I don't really recall when it was, but there was a Wal*Mart documentary on the television where the top members of the company described how even the corporate office isn't particularly fancy; for instance you don't see Donald Trump style ornamentation in the CEO's office. Instead, his office is a standard little box with cheesey wood paneling left from the day the building was built. Rather standard stuff.
I think all that's great. There really is no reason for the price of toilet paper to go up a nickel a roll because the CEO of the company that makes it needs to buy an Oriental rug for his 90th floor corner office overlooking Manhattan.
On the other hand, Wal*Mart crushes labor unions 'to save the consumer money'. Well that would be ok if Wal*Mart had one store and thirty employees. But since they are the largest employer in the country, they are lowering the standard of living for Americans; organized labor at Wal*Mart would put real money into the pockets of employees.
Maybe Sam Walton was a noble man with the goal of making goods affordable for the common man. The trouble is, the beast he created has destroyed everything around the common man; but at least we can get 12 packs of diet soda for 99 cents.
Ian, you don't drink diet soda.
I only drink diet soda.
